Broken is a juried exhibition that engages with the idea of being broken—emotionally, physically, socially, politically, ecologically, economically and systemically. Broken objects may simply be non-functional, or they may be in many pieces. People who have endured trauma may refer to themselves as “broken”; although they seem fine on the outside, they may carry a wound deep inside. Ideas, nations, dreams…so many things can be broken. Broken examines the broken pieces not only as destruction, but as revelation or revolution. Here, brokenness is not solely defined by damage or loss, but as a moment of transformation, resistance, or quiet resilience. A badly healed fracture may need to be broken once again to heal properly. Breaking down barriers or breaking free present amazing opportunities. Out of the pain of breaking can emerge something wonderful.
This exhibition explores all possible ideas surrounding the notion of “broken.”
