Youth Against

As if capturing the “in-between” — the moment just before — Youth Against seizes the present through photography, before the eye and mind. The project aims to observe and tell stories as fragments of life, where small acts of care and solidarity often seem to make an appearance.

My approach for this project is firmly rooted in a documentation of everyday organizing life, existing in between the intimacy of the spaces we share and the acts of justice we engage in: cut oranges we share while simultaneously celebrating lunar new year and planning an action, a pondering portrait of Alberto  at a renter rights workshop, and the newspaper pasted all over to the wall to remember our continuing struggle.

My goal with Youth Against is to shine light on the humanity and care of the members I have spent the past year organizing alongside with, which is so rarely seen in the big actions, the news, or on their social media. Those seemingly mundane but defining acts of love between organizers and community members are the building blocks for that action that we see on the streets. I hope to create a project that defines itself on those quiet moments and is later amplified by our acts of outspokenness and advocacy, striking a visual balance between intimacy and community justice.
